Bio

Retired, former editor/publisher of a magazine for letter-writers. Having dropped out of graduate studies in the history of literacy many years ago, I come back now and again to some of the writers and topics that held my attention back then, such as George Steiner and his sense of the role played by "shared secrecy" in the origin and development of languages, Lionel Trilling, Eric Havelock's Preface to Plato, Walter Ong's studies on literacy.
